Legal Requirements for Fire Safety in Ireland

The Health and Safety Authority requires all employers to comply with current fire safety legislation and standards.

Fire Services Act 1981–2003

Fire-fighting equipment must be provided and accessible so employees can tackle a fire in its early stages without putting themselves at risk. Equipment must be suitable for the hazards present, and staff must receive proper training in its use.

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005

Employers are legally required to:

  • Carry out fire risk assessments

  • Implement fire prevention and detection measures

  • Ensure safe emergency escape routes

  • Provide appropriate fire-fighting equipment

Training must also be provided to protect employees from workplace risks, including fire.
Maintaining a fire safety register for all business premises is also a legal requirement.

IS 291: 2015 Fire Extinguishers

This standard outlines the correct servicing and maintenance of fire equipment:

  • Fire extinguishers must be serviced annually by a qualified person

  • All extinguishers have a maximum lifespan of 10 years

  • Appropriate fire safety signage must be in place

  • Neck rings must be fitted after discharge and refill

  • All reports and certificates must meet IS 291 requirements

  • Service labels must be attached with full maintenance details
