Understanding the Different Colours
Fire extinguishers in Ireland are designed with clear colour markings to make identification simple when it matters most.
Although the main body is red, each one features a coloured label that indicates the type of fire it can be used on. Understanding these markings can make a critical difference in an emergency.

Red-labelled extinguishers are used for Class A fires, involving everyday materials such as wood, paper, fabrics, and some plastics. They typically contain water or water-based solutions.

Cream labels indicate foam extinguishers, suitable for Class B fires involving flammable liquids like petrol, oil, and solvents. They also help prevent re-ignition by forming a protective layer over the fire.

Blue-labelled extinguishers contain dry powder and are commonly used in mixed-risk environments. They are effective on a range of fire types, including electrical hazards.

Black labels identify COâ‚‚ extinguishers, which are ideal for electrical fires and flammable liquids. They are a clean option, leaving no residue behind.

Yellow-labelled extinguishers are designed for Class F fires, involving cooking oils and fats. These are commonly found in commercial kitchens and are highly effective at cooling and preventing re-ignition.
